The Herm AshesMETECC proudly sponsored the first annual Lord’s Taverners charity cricket match on Herm Island, known as the Herm Ashes.
In September 2010 Peter and Sharon met Mike Gatting, ex-England captain and one of the ECB selectors, at the White House Hotel on Herm Island, Channel Islands. There the idea was mooted for the Guernsey branch of the Lord’s Taverners annual charity cricket match to take place on Herm Island, where it had previously been held on Sark. All winter the Herm Island gardeners worked on changing Moss Field, formerly used for grazing cows, into the international cricket ground with a slope to rival Lords itself. On the other hand, the view from the boundary on Herm Island simply cannot be beaten! Sterling efforts were made by Herm’s Director of Hospitality, Jonathan Watson, in co-ordinating all the arrangements for the day. Plans for METECC’s involvement were finalised with Jonathan in May before the actual match on 17th July 2011. The match was well attended by supporters of the charity, METECC and some of our customers.
On the day the celebrities included Mike Gatting, Andy Caddick, Chris Tarrant, Lorraine Chase,
Bill Turnbull and Eastenders actors Ricky Groves, Perry Fenwick and Steve McFadden. It was a
20 over match ending with the burning of the bails to make ashes, which were put into a replica
of the England/Australia urn, and the presentation of a crystal trophy, here also note the similarity
to the Australian Ashes trophy! Lorraine Chase batted, bowled and fielded beautifully and was The whole fund-raising weekend with its associated auction and lobster lunch on Herm Island raised a final total of £55,000. Everyone thought that the location of the event whilst in Sark was superb, but how very much better it was on Herm! Both Perry Fenwick and Steve McFadden asked to join the Lord’s Taverners Guernsey region, as they had so much fun. METECC’S sponsorship will continue so we hope that more of our customers will join us there on Sunday 1st July 2012 for the next Herm Ashes cricket match. The Lord’s Taverners reported on the match: FRIDAY 15th – SUNDAY 17th JULY Last weekend saw Chris Tarrant’s XI take on Mike Gatting’s XI in the inaugural cricket match on Herm, within the annual
